Wabash unsure of future; closing is an option

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — One of North America’s largest trailer makers doesn’t know how long it can carry on in this market.

In documents filed with the Security and Exchange Commission, Wabash National has expressed concerns about its viability going forward.

“There is substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," the company said in its annual Form 10-K, which was delayed for several weeks.

According to local media, the trailer maker disclosed it remains in default on financial obligations and it is currently considering options ranging from an increase in interest due on its outstanding principal; termination of its revolving line of credit; and even closing down operations.

The board of directors has authorized management to pursue a wide range of strategic alternatives, including select business divestitures, changes to the company’s capital structure, or a possible sale or merger. Though, "there can be no assurance that this evaluation will result in any specific transaction."

Wabash is a leading North American van trailer maker, but the company recorded a net loss of $124.7 million in 2008.

With over-the-road freight market as weak as it’s been, it’s been a rough year for trailer makers. Trailmobile, for one, is restructuring and there’s no word when it will continue its Mississauga operations.
