MONCTON, N.B. — Drivers turning left off of Weldon Street onto Main Street often find themselves in an awkward predicament.

The motorist travelling either east or west on Main Street will come to Xs on the road warning them a pedestrian crossing is ahead. They are required to stop at the red light to allow pedestrians in front of Highfield Square to pass safely.

The confusion occurs when someone attempts to make a left turn from Weldon Street onto Main only to discover the distance is typically too short to move completely into their lane of traffic on Main Street, and end up blocking the east-bound lane.

According to Codiac RCMP traffic co-ordinator Sgt. Blake O’Leary, when drivers sit at Weldon Street, before they exit they should ensure the traffic light marking the pedestrian crossing is green — then turn left safely into their lane to make the pass.

To avoid frustrating delays and possible accidents, choosing an alternate route to access Main Street may be the best approach, police say.
