VANCOUVER, B.C. — Three little-used ferries that BC Ferries has decided aren’t suited to the high level of commercial trucks and buses on its routes are going up on the auction block.

The three aluminum vessels are technically advanced PacifiCAT-class fast ferries that can carry 1,000 passengers and 250 vehicles, and make up to 34 knots.

The PacifiCat Explorer, PacifiCat Discovery and PacifiCat Voyager, each 122-metres long, are among the largest catamaran fast ferries in the world. They were designed by world-renowned Phil Hercus of Incat Designs in Sydney, Australia and built in B.C. Two of the ferries were built in 1999, and the third was built in 2000.

The vessels will be sold off at unreserved public auction by Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers on March 24 at the Canada Place cruise ship terminal. They go on the block at 11 a.m. local time. Bidders can also participate in the auction over the Internet using Ritchie Bros.’ rbauctionBid-Live Service.

Full details about the ferry auction are available at www.rbauction.com.
