OAKVILLE, Ont. — President of the federal Treasury Board, Tony Clement, today visited Tandet Group to discuss his government’s aim to reduce red tape in the trucking industry.

A report entitled ‘Cutting Red Tape; Freeing Business to Grow’ identified the interprovincial trucking industry’s concerns with the lack of harmonized regulations across the country. The report was issued by the Harper government earlier this year.

The report recommended that the feds: increase the uniformity in the enforcement of the transport of dangerous goods; provide a predictable and uniform business environment across Canada and for Transport Canada to engage its provincial and territorial counterparts with proposals to advance the harmonization of National Safety Code regulations; and provide businesses with greater certainty and predictability through reasonable timeliness and service standards.

Scott Tilley, president of Tandet Group, welcomed the discussion.

“As a tank truck carrier serving customers from coast to coast in Canada and in the US, we are subject to many regulations. We are not opposed to regulation, but we do want them to be smart regulations that are uniformly applied,” Tilley said.

David Bradley, head of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, also was encouraged by the visit.

“The industry is pleased to see that key members of the Harper government’s cabinet are committed to reducing red tape for trucking businesses,” he said.
