HALIFAX, N.S. — The province of Nova Scotia has provided a $500,000 loan guarantee to American Feeder Lines International, helping them transport containers by ship from the Port of Halifax to markets in New England.

Specifically, the money will help support the company’s weekly shipping service from Halifax to Boston and Portland, the province announced.

“Strong transportation links are the key for exporting our products to international markets, and for economic growth,” said Percy Paris, Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. “This investment will create good jobs and help to make Nova Scotia businesses be more competitive.”

The provinces said the investment will support up to 40 local jobs and will strengthen the Port of Halifax’s position as a gateway for some 240,000 containers destined for New England, which are currently moving by truck or rail through other ports.
