MONTREAL, Que. A new “Radio Hero Award” has been developed by Cobra Electronics Corp., Popular Communications magazine and React International Inc. in an effort to honor two-way radio users for courageous acts.

The recently established award recognizes individuals who communicate via Citizen’s Band (CB), Family Radio Service (FRS) or General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) to save a life, prevent major injury or property damage, or give direct assistance in the apprehension of wanted criminals.

The first recipient to receive the award was Sgt. Bill Ward of Indiana’s Henry County Sherrif’s Department. Ward used his Cobra CB radio to apprehend two murder suspects; both remain in custody in New Hampshire.

The radio award will be presented every six months to an eligible citizen of Canada or the U.S., aged 18 years or older. A second category has also been established for ages five to 17. Judging is based on application forms and accompanying documentation to verify the event.

Submissions can be sent to Mary Sullivan at AVS Technologies, 2100 Trans Canada, Hwy South, Montreal, Que., H9P 2N4, or email mls@avs.ca. n
