FRANKFORT, Ky. – Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake has commenced production of its air disc brakes at the company’s Kentucky plant making it the first truck brake manufacturer to mass produce disc brakes in North America. An air disc brake assembly line was installed at an existing Bendix plant, costing the company $6 million. The company can now manufacture up to 120,000 Bendix ADB22X disc brakes per year at the facility.

“Our commitment to produce air disc brakes in North America demonstrates an evolutionary first step toward greater North American air disc brake adoption,” said Kishor Pendse, president, Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake. “Our investment in air disc brakes in North America enables the technology to better compete on a cost-basis with current brake designs.”

Bendix officials say it will be several years before the North American trucking industry adopts air disc brakes. More needs to be done to address costs, Pendse said.

Disc brakes have been proven to improve brake responsiveness, reduce fade and improve stopping capability.

Greater brake balance and wear life are also benefits of air disc brakes, the company says.

“Today’s air disc brake is a dramatic improvement over past generations offered in North America,” said Alf Siebke, director, air disc brakes, Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake.
