WINNIPEG, Man. – After his recent visit to Europe, Manitoba Premier Gary Doer is determined to make his province the leader in hydrogen fuel production.
After seeing hydrogen fuel cells in action in prototype Icelandic buses, Doer is convinced that Manitoba is the perfect province to start producing hydrogen commercially due to its cheap electricity and plentiful water supply.
“The real sense I had is that the development of hydrogen fuel cells is accelerating,” Doer tells local media. Shortly after returning from Manitoba from his European trip, Doer met with Hydro Minister, Greg Selinger to discuss the idea. Hydrogen has been considered the future for the transportation industry by many, but economical production and on-road storage remain two stumbling blocks to its acceptance. n
