Freightliner introduces SmartWay specing packages for Columbia, Century Class S/T

PORTLAND, Ore. — Freightliner has announced its Columbia and Century Class S/T have received SmartWay designation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The company says it will now roll out two new specing packages that allow for even better fuel mileage and emissions reductions on the two models.

The EPAs SmartWay program aims to reduce carbon dioxide, NOx and particulate matter. The program acknowledges truck makers that produce fuel efficient and environmentally-friendly vehicles. SmartWay-approved trucks can be 10-20% more fuel efficient than comparable models and can be 90% cleaner, the EPA says.

“We continue to utilize resources – like our industry-first Class 8 wind tunnel – that allow us to make design and aerodynamic improvements,” said Timothy Blubaugh, director of government technical affairs for Freightliner. “This research, along with our participation in programs like SmartWay, is why Freightliner is the right choice for fleet owners and operators who need an efficient business solution.”

To be approved by SmartWay, trucks must feature an aerodynamic design, have a 2007 engine under the hood and boast a sleeper cab, side fairings and low rolling resistance tires. They must also be available with auxiliary power units or other idle-reduction technology. Owners of vehicles that comply can receive a SmartWay decal to display on their truck.

Freightliner customers can join the program by specing the Columbia 120 or Century Class S/T with a SmartWay package that includes a Bergstrom NITE or Idle Solutions APU and a 70-inch raised roof sleeper.

“These trucks aren’t just compliant with EPA ’07 emissions standards. They’re recognized by the EPA to be the cleanest and most fuel efficient trucks on the road,” said Blubaugh. “By assembling these spec packages, we’re making it easy to participate in the SmartWay program.”
