Goodyear’s Wingfoot takes industry top honours

AKRON, Ohio. (May 11, 2005) — Goodyear’s Wingfoot Commercial Tire Systems LLC earned “Best in Show” honours for the first time ever at a recent retread contest by the Tire Industry Association.

Receiving the top award in “Truck Mold Cure” was Darrell Yoder Jr., plant manager of a Wingfoot Commercial Tire center in Brunswick, Ohio.

Retreaders from around the world submitted their best work for World Tire Expo in Louisville, Ky. The Tread Rubber and Repair Materials Manufacturers Group judged the displays.

The mold cure retreading process includes a casing on which uncured rubber is applied. A curing press molds a design and vulcanizes the rubber to the casing using temperature and pressure, according to Jim Foughty, director of manufacturing for Wingfoot Commercial Tire.

After receiving his first honor, Yoder then won first place in “Excellence in Tire Repair,” scoring a 98 percent on a quiz and on his ability to perform all of the necessary steps for repairing a standard radial truck tire puncture.

Wingfoot Commercial Tire Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, with 171 commercial tire sales, service and retread facilities.
