Michelin trailer tire boosts fuel efficiency

by Today's Trucking

Michelin has unveiled its X One Line Energy T2 tire, described as its most fuel-efficient linehaul trailer tire.

Targeting dry van truckload, refrigerated truckload, and tanker applications, Michelin says the tire can boost fuel savings thanks to an 11% drop in rolling resistance, and also increase the opportunity for revenue by supporting up to 287 lb. of additional payload.

The weight savings are based on replacing Michelin X Line Energy T tires with Alcoa Ultra One wheels with Michelin X One Line Energy T2 tires with Alcoa Ultra One wheels.

The X One Line Energy T2’s tread design uses compounds designed to resist what’s described as “late-life tire aggression”. The dual-compound tread includes a top layer that controls stiffness and stress in the name of reducing irregular wear, and a fuel-efficient bottom layer that minimizes internal casing temperatures for lower rolling resistance.

The tread itself includes directional micro-sipes that results in a directional tire for the first half of its life. Matrix siping and zigzag walls along the center ribs interlock to resist squirming forces.
