N.B. greenlights permits for 4-axle semis

FREDERICTON, N.B. — New special permits for four-axle semi-trailers transporting dry bulk products will be issued to the trucking industry in New Brunswick, the province’s Transport Minister Denis Landry announced.

The permits — which allow four-axle semis hauling dry bulk up to 55,500 kg (depending on the axle configuration) on major highways in New Brunswick — became available upon application, yesterday, May 1, 2007.

To qualify, semi-trailer axle group 5, 6 and 7 must be a tridem group utilizing a full air suspension system.

Axle 4 (only one that can be a lift axle) must be pneumatically tied into the tridem axle group 5, 6 and 7; and for axle group 4, 5, 6, and 7, the load must be equalized between adjacent axles in the group to within 1000 kg.

Axle 4 may also be equipped with single, wide-base tires as well as dual tires.

The self-steering axle may be liftable, but the controls, whether remote or manual, to raise or lower the self-steering axle must be located on the semi-trailer only, except for a semi-trailer designed to carry raw forest products where the controls can be in the cab, says the ministry.

Also, the quad-axle semi-trailer must be equipped with a device that accurately displays the total weight on the semi-trailer axles in kilograms, or with a device and a table or chart from the combined use of which the total weight on the semi-trailer axles in kilograms may be readily and accurately obtained.
