New ductile iron trailer hubs from ConMet

ConMet announced the addition of PreSet ductile iron trailer hubs into its family of hub designs.

The company says the hubs combine strength, lower maintenance, and longer life. The hub uses a spacer to positively set the bearing clearance, and the addition of qualified long life seals. The hub and all its components are precisely machined to exacting tolerances, including higher precision bearings. The optimum bearing setting is guaranteed and retained for the serviceable life of the entire hub assembly, eliminating the need for the traditional manual wheel end adjustments that can cause excessive bearing preload or endplay, the company says.

ConMet has chosen as standard the ScotSeal PlusXL seal from Chicago Rawhide. The seal is installed using a computer controlled press to a controlled depth to ensure minimum runout and maximum seal efficiency in protecting against leaks and contamination.

With conventional hubs, assembly and installation is a lengthy and time-consuming process. With PreSet hubs, the company says, installation is an easy two-step process. The operator installs the self-piloting hub assembly on to the axle spindle, and then torques the retaining nut to 300 ft-lbs. Because the hub is pre-assembled, misalignment or risk of damage to the internal components during installation is minimized. Once installed, a hubcap and lubricant are added, ensuring a trouble-free wheel end system.

All PreSet hubs are also offered with and without precision-stamped ABS tone rings and come with a 3 year/350,000 mile limited warranty.
