PROVINCIAL OUT-OF-ADJUSTMENT FINES

Fines for having brakes out of adjustment vary widely across Canada.

1. British Columbia: $100 per brake out of adjustment + $500 if more than 50% are out of adjustment + 15% surcharge for victim services.

2. Alberta: $200 + 15% victim surcharge = $230, with offence the same for one or
all brakes out of adjustment.

3. Saskatchewan: $100 per defective brake (including out of adjustment) + $150
extra if more than 25% defective brakes + $30 to $50 victim surcharge (amount
is based on the total amount of the fine).

4. Manitoba: $130 (whether there are one or more brakes out of adjustment).

5. Ontario: $405 plus a victim fine surcharge of $95 for a total of $500.

6. Quebec: No fine directly related to out-of-adjustment brakes. However, the owner can be fined $700 if his vehicle is declared out-of-service for any reason,
including out-of-adjustment brakes.

7. New Brunswick: $140 plus 20% victims services fee = $168. In the process of
introducing regulation that will allow fines up to $384 (including VSF) depending
on severity of offence.

8. Prince Edward Island: $100 + $20 for victims of crime.

9. Newfoundland & Labrador: Minimum $20.00 to maximum $90.00.

10. Yukon: Either $40 or $125, depending on the charge (+ territorial surcharge of
15%). No extra charges for having more than 25% or the brakes defective, although option of making it a mandatory court appearance, which normally results in more $$.
