PSI International tracking wheel temperatures in real time

PSI International is tracking more than pressure alone, introducing the Digital ThermAlert sensor that uses telematics to communicate wheel end temperatures in real time.

ThermAlert has actually been a standard feature on the PSI ATIS system since 2017, but the visibility is now available through its TireView Live portal or integrated into telematics systems such as those from Road Ready or Clarience Technologies.

Making it possible to analyze historical wheel end temperatures, the sensors also make it possible to identify dragging brakes or bearing issues, so service can be scheduled before damage occurs. Users can customize when alerts are triggered.

Temperature readings are taken from inside the spindle, at the wheel bearings, which minimizes the effects of external thermal influences, the company says. The sensor itself is powered by a replaceable battery. A conductor wire runs through the axle and attaches to a modified PSI spindle plug.

Other company launches during the annual meeting of the Technology & Maintenance Council included a video to tell drivers what to do if a warning light is triggered on automatic tire inflation systems and the Meritor Tire Inflation System.

A new TireView Live app brings the portal’s information to mobile environments, helping pre-trip and post-trip inspections, sorting and sharing data, and more.
