Newcom South Asian Media Co. launches

TORONTO, Ont. – Newcom Media Inc. has formed Newcom South Asian Media Co. – a 50/50 joint venture with Road Today Publishing Inc. – that will serve the rapidly expanding South Asian community within Canada’s trucking industry. The venture will be based out of Newcom Media’s new Toronto headquarters. Manan Gupta, the founder of Road Today Media Group, has been named general manager, effective July 1. Newcom South Asian Media Co. will relaunch the regional Road Today magazine as a national publication this fall and will create a series of recruitment and resource expos at Toronto’s International Centre. The first expo has been set for Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018. Dates for two more events, in Spring and Fall 2019, will be finalized in coming weeks.

Westcan driver named 2018 Highway Star

TORONTO, Ont. – Doug McGowan of Westcan Bulk Transport has been named the 2018 Highway Star of the Year – recognizing Canada’s top truck driver or owner-operator. Selected through a national search by Newcom Media’s Today’s Trucking, Truck News, and Truck West magazines, the driver was presented with the honor during the Truck World trade show in Toronto. “It’s a great honor ... there are a lot of excellent drivers out there,” said McGowan. “I’d also like to take this time to promote retiring military personnel towards driving positions, using myself as an example.”

Jardine Transport acquires R.E.M.

DARTMOUTH, NS -- Jardine Transport has purchased Saint Stephen, New Brunswick-based R.E.M Transport. R.E.M. was established in 1973 and currently operates a fleet of more than 50 power units and 60 trailers throughout most of Canada and the United States. The company has approximately 70 employees. "This is a strategically important transaction for Jardine. The acquisition adds scale to our existing operations and increases network density, which will result in improved overall efficiency" said Dean Cull, chairman of Jardine Transport.
