Americans show preference for protectionism: Poll

PHOENIX, Ariz. — A new poll shows that more than half of Americans want "Buy American" rules to stay in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and even more supposedly approve of keeping the southern border closed to Mexican trucks.

According to news reports, a national survey by public opinion firm Rasmussen Reports shows 66 of respondents oppose allowing select Mexican trucks beyond the 20-mile commercial restriction zones at the border.

Congress scrapped a Bush-era pilot project that allowed unfettered access to a limited number of Mexican carriers in January, but President Obama approves of starting a new program.

The same poll found that 52 percent don’t want foreign companies, including Canadian ones, from bidding on, or supplying projects that are funded with stimulus money.

Only 18 percent thought it was a good idea.

We’re not sure if the poll included a question on whether respondents want to keep Canadian oil and water away as well.
