Atlantic truckers to halt in protest of soaring fuel costs

MONCTON (March 3, 2003) — Truckers in Atlantic Canada said they will park their trucks this morning to protest the high price of diesel fuel and other operating costs.

A group in New Brunswick said they will hold a “meeting” on the Trans-Canada Highway near an Irving Big Stop outside Fredericton beginning at 7 a.m. local time. Truckers in Nova Scotia plan a similar action near the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick border.

Organizers hoped to have about 300 protesters.

Sgt. Gary Cameron, an RCMP spokesman in Fredericton, told the Moncton Telegraph-Journal that officers will be on hand.

“We have every reason to believe it will be a peaceful demonstration,” he said. “We always try to communicate with the organizers to ensure everything goes well and quietly.”

Ralph Boyd, president of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, distanced his group from the protests, saying it supports further negotiations with individual shippers on fuel surcharges and rate increases.
