California governor warns of attacks on bridges

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2001) — California Gov. Gray Davis ordered security increased around four major bridges in his state following what he called a “credible” terrorist threat.

Davis named the Golden Gate and Bay bridges in the San Francisco area, the Vincent Thomas Bridge near Los Angeles, and the Coronado Bridge in San Diego as possible targets.

He warned of an attack during rush hours sometime between today and Nov. 7.

Officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation have been widely reported as saying there is little to corroborate the specifics Davis offered.
