Canada, U.S. sign agreement on cross-border strategy

WINDSOR, Ont. (Oct. 16, 2000) — Canada and the United States have signed an agreement to improve collaboration on surface transportation matters such as intelligent transportation systems and streamlined border-crossing initiatives.

Speaking at a trade conference in Windsor, Ont., Federal Transport Minister David Collenette said delays due to increasing trade and tourist traffic between Canada and the United States are a drag on the economies of both countries.

Most of the initiatives relate to strategy and sharing information. They include the development and implementation of intelligent transportation systems architecture, standards and joint deployment initiatives

The agreement is online at Transport Canada’s web site.
