CanAm land trade still sliding down

WASHINGTON — Surface transportation trade between Canada and the U.S., was down 29.6 percent from August 2008, settling at $32.9 billion.

The value of imports carried by truck was 26.1 percent below August 2008 levels, while the value of exports carried by truck was 17 percent lower during this period, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Total trade between the U.S. Canada and Mexico was down 24.9 percent in August from the year-ago period.

Surface transportation, or freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline, accounts for about 88 percent of U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico.
