CALGARY, Atla. — Carmacks Enterprises and Odin Systems International have joined forces to provide Canada with a line of products that improve winter road safety.

Carmacks believes its product, called Fixed Anti-icing Spraying Technology (FAST), can “significantly reduce” the amount of vehicle accidents caused by icy roads.

“I’m positive that black ice will be a thing of the past,” says Carmacks president Ron Hystad.

In 2000, a FAST system was installed on a dangerous portion of Ontario’s 401 Highway. This resulted in a “100 percent” reduction of winter-related accidents, according to statistics, Carmacks says.

FAST works by spraying anti-icing chemicals onto the pavement. Odin’s technology is triggered by pavement temperature, surface conditions and the weather, Carmacks says.

The company adds that FAST is “more effective than reacting to reports of icy roads with salt and sand.”

Carmacks says the technology is already in use in the U.S., including in Alaska, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

A construction contractor since 1974, Carmacks has been involved in highway maintenance since 1996 and currently maintains a Calgary highway that has a daily volume of 200,000 vehicles.
