CAW to represent workers at Sterling Truck plant

ST. THOMAS, Ont. (Oct. 9, 2002) — About 1,100 workers at Freightliner LLC’s Sterling Truck plant in St. Thomas, Ont., will be represented by the Canadian Auto Workers union.

On Monday, the Ontario Labour Relations Board certified the CAW as a collective bargaining agent after confirming that a majority of the plant’s hourly workers had signed union cards. The bargaining unit includes all production, maintenance, quality assurance, and material handling employees.

In a joint statement yesterday, the union and Freightliner said no dates have been set to begin contract negotiations. The St. Thomas plant produces heavy- and medium-duty trucks for Freightliner under the Sterling brand.

CAW is Canada’s largest private sector union with over 250,000 members. It is currently negotiating with Freightliner parent DaimlerChrysler on a new collective agreement for 13,000 unionized workers in Canada.
