Cement shipments offer glimpse at coming trend

OTTAWA, Ont. — Some of the first financial information released by Statistics Canada for the month of September, Canadian cement manufacturers shipped 1,362,416 metric tonnes of product, down 4.7 per cent.

Since the Sept. 11, attacks on New York and Washington, there has been a great deal on speculation on how low the economy would go. Last August, the same cement producers cranked out 1,429,058,tonnes for the month.

Year-to-date shipments, mind you, are still in the black with totals up 1.3 per cent for 2001.
