Could a converted tunnel provide relief at the Ambassador Bridge?

WINDSOR, Ont. (Oct. 30, 2001) — A Toronto-based engineering firm wants to convert a 100-year-old freight train tunnel running under the Detroit River between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit into a toll-route for trucks.

Borealis Infrastructure Management, owner of the old Detroit River Rail Tunnel, would also build a new tunnel for trains next to the old one. Land purchased around the tunnel openings would be used to build connectors to Hwy. 401 on the Windsor side, and I-75 on the Detroit side.

The project would cost $350 million to $400 million US, Borealis officials told the Detroit Free Press, and would be paid for with private funds. Construction and maintenance costs would be reclaimed through tolls.

The company said the new rail tunnel could open by 2005, and a two-way truck tunnel by 2006.
