CP Rail opens expanded intermodal facility

HAMILTON, Ont. (Nov. 13, 2000) — Canadian Pacific Railway completed a $18.5 million expansion of its Aberdeen Yard intermodal facility in Hamilton, Ont., to handle steel, plastics, lumber, and newsprint.

In partnership with the railway are Active Transport, of Milton; East Port Warehousing of Burlington; Grant Haulage of Mississauga; Polymer Distribution, of Milton; and Steelcare, of Stoney Creek, Ont.

Most of the investment was for the new steel transfer facility owned and operated by Steelcare. The 150,000-square-foot facility, completed at a cost of $14.5 million, features four 40-tonne cranes to quickly unload and load railcars as well as temporary, climate-controlled storage of perishable steel.

About $2 million was invested in the distribution centre’s plastics transfer operation and another $1 million was invested in the lumber transfer operation. The remainder was dedicated to upgrading the yard’s infrastructure and modifications to the Aberdeen Ave. street access to the railway yard.

An open house will be held Nov. 18 and 19, from noon to 6 p.m. each day.
