Dangerous goods haulers under FBI microscope

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is beginning a massive investigation that will include record checks on every trucker licensed to haul hazardous materials.

CNN is reporting that the FBI is compiling a list of all trucking companies licensed by the Department of Transportation to haul chemicals. The FBI then plans to do a background check on all truckers working for those fleets.

The announcement comes on the heels of the arrest of Nabil Al-Marabh, a former Boston cab driver with links to Osama bin Laden. Marabh has a license to haul dangerous goods in the U.S.

"Today, I can report to you that our investigation has uncovered several individuals who may have links to the hijackers, who fraudulently have obtained or attempted to obtain hazardous material transportation licences," Attorney-General John Ashcroft announced yesterday.

He is urging anyone familiar with suspicious hazardous waste haulers to contact the FBI immediately.
