Eastern Premiers pledge cooperation
ST. JOHN’S, Nfld. — The Atlantic Provinces took the first step towards regional cooperation last week when they released a two-year action plan to improve services for the region’s people.
The action plan, Working Together for Atlantic Canada: An Action Plan for Regional Cooperation, demonstrates the four premiers are ready and willing to share knowledge and skills to better serve the region, explains New Brunswick boss Bernard Lord.
The trucking industry will not be overlooked by the initiative, either. The harmonization of rules governing the movement of oversize/overweight loads is clearly on the list of work to be done. Other highlights for the trucking industry will include technology systems for tracking safety compliance records, as well as issuing permits and licences. Drivers will also be able to access information including regulations and weight restrictions online.
“We’ll be presenting that as a model for the rest of the country to hopefully build on and develop further,” says Nfld. Premier Roger Grimes.
The leaders have already committed to try and accomplish certain items on the plan by 2003.
