REVELSTOKE, B.C. — Tragedy struck a highways crew near Revelstoke Sunday night, after a worker investigating a mudslide was caught in another one which swept him into a lake.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) divers are trying to recover the body, and drivers on the Trans-Canada Hwy. faced a five hour detour yesterday.
Jim Davidson, a Department of Highways spokesman, said the mudslide was massive.
“What it is that came down on the highway from the two slides is approximately, and this is a very rough figure, 140 dump trucks of material,” says Davidson.
The RCMP, Workers Compensation Board, Ministry of Transportation and the highways contractor are all investigating, while crews continue to remove debris from the highway.
