Feds add more Canadian highways to funding list

OTTAWA, (Sept. 24, 2004) — Canada’s transport ministers and the federal government have expanded the list of highways eligible for federal funding.

While Transport Minister Jean Lapierre made no financial commitments to fix dilapidated provincial roads, he did confirm that Ottawa has added about 2,700 kilometres to the 24,000-kilometre network of highways that qualify for federal funding.

New roads that will potentially qualify for new federal cash include Highway 403 between Hamilton and Brantford, Ont., Highway 11 north of Saskatoon, and Highway 20 east of Riviere-du-Loup, Que.

Lapierre also told Ontario it wold have to sit tight before the federal government commits on a proposal for high-speed Via rail line in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor.

The Crown corporation is still searching for a new chairman and president.
