Flying J, Petro agree on Wi-Fi standard for wireless network access

OGDEN, Utah (April 3, 2003) — Flying J and Petro Stopping Centers will offer wireless hot-spot service for their truck stops using Wi-Fi, a networking technology based on the 802.11b communications standard.

The agreement to use Wi-Fi establishes a common platform for wireless network access at two of North America’s largest truck stop chains. They call their alliance the Travel Plaza Alliance Network.

“The alliance will help to eliminate a major part of the confusion and cost associated with incompatible and fragmented services across the industry,” said J. Phillip Adams, president of Flying J.

The number of Wi-Fi-equipped truck stops is expected to multiply dramatically by the end of the year. Flying J said it has installed 802.11b systems at approximately 50 per cent of its 160 sites in the United States and Canada.
