Freight Index: LTL Costs Stabilize, Truckload Increases

TORONTO —  A new report shows the total cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers increased 2.6% in March from the month before, according to the Canadian General Freight Index.

Total freight costs are 3.5% higher in March when compared to the same time a year earlier.

The Base Rate Index, which excludes accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased by 2.7% in March when compared to February and is 6.5% higher than during the same time in 2014.

Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers increased for the month. Fuel was 17.02% of base rates in March versus 16.02% in February. This is down nearly a quarter from the same time last year due to lower fuel prices.

“LTL total freight costs appear to be stabilizing with a small decrease in domestic LTL and a slight increase in cross-border LTL.” said Doug Payne, president  & COO of Nulogx, a transportation management system provider which provides analysis of the report. “Domestic truckload has seen six straight months of increases while cross-border truckload has now seen eight straight months of increases.”

The index results are based on a sample of transactions taken from the Nulogx database of more than $750 million in annual freight transactions.
