Freightliner to expand SelecTrucks, reman program

PORTLAND, Ore. (Oct. 12, 1999) — SelecTrucks, Freightliner’s used truck operation, is developing its North American operations and is planning two more models for its Legacy Class of remanufactured conventionals, company officials said.

SelecTrucks opened its first used truck centers — partnerships between Freightliner Market Development Corp. and selected dealers — in the U.S. in July 1997. There are now 24 SelecTrucks Centers in the U.S., with three more to open by year’s end in Arizona, Minneapolis and Nashville. The plan is to have approximately 30 U.S. centers.

Canada has three centers — Calgary, Montreal, and Toronto, and plans for two more are in the works. Freightliner plans to establish a SelecTrucks network in Mexico.

Developed last year, the remanufacturing program involves the conversion of Navistar International cabovers into a day-cab conventional tractors, model designation Legacy FLS 112.

These vehicles have a remanufactured Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine, remanufactured Eaton transmission and “rebuilt to like new standards” Eaton (Dana Spicer) DS402 40,000-pound capacity tandem rear axles married to a new Freightliner FLS 112 cab and chassis.

The remanufacturing program is being broadened to offer a Legacy truck next, expected to be available for sale by the end of the year, followed by the Legacy Classic day-cab tractor, due out in March. The truck’s specs will be similar to the current tractor. The 200-inch wheelbase Classic will have a 12.7-liter Detroit Diesel Series 60 rated at 430 hp at 1,800 rpm, Eaton RTX-609B 9-speed transmission, 12,000-pound capacity Meritor front axle and Meritor RT40145, 40,000-pound capacity rears.
