WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta says the U.S. will make federal funds available to create additional truck parking.

The response came when the American Trucking Associations sent a letter to Mineta asking whether or not Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds may be used to transform commuter parking areas and weigh stations into additional truck parking.

The letter pointed out most states will have excess to highway safety funds to for very few operations. ATA asked Mineta to clarify if the funds may be used to create more parking spaces for trucks.

STP provides federal dollars to each state of transportation enhancements. However, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century imposes penalties on states who lack repeat offender and/or open container laws by 2002.

The penalties will take money from STP funds and move them to Sec. 402 funds, which may only be used, “to reduce traffic accidents and deaths, injuries and property damage resulting therefrom.”
