Hwy. 407 tolls to increase

TORONTO, Ont. — The Ontario Liberals have leaked a company document that indicates 407 International can raise tolls on Hwy. 407 as much as it wants.

This despite the fact that the Ontario government assured the public that tolls could only be raised by two per cent each year for the first 15 years following the Apr. 13, 1999 privatization. Under that plan, rates could only be increased three cents per kilometre over the first 15 years.

“I don’t think they told the truth when they announced the sale of (Hwy. 407),” says Liberal finance critic, Gerry Phillips. “It looks to me like they completely abandoned their obligation to 407 users.”

Transportation Minister, Brad Clark, insists the original formula still stands, but he wouldn’t say there would be no toll caps.

Meanwhile, 407 International is hiking tolls for the fourth time in 27 months in the new year.
