Isuzo and Hino talk about joint truck business

TOKYO (Jan. 9, 2001) — Isuzu Motors and Hino Motors have made a deal to merge their bus-making operations beginning in October 2003, and a similar deal could be in the works for their truck-making business.

The New York Times reports the vehicle makers have been negotiating the bus deal for two years, and that the companies have also been discussing combining their truck-making divisions.

The venture will combine bus manufacturing, purchasing and research and development. The buses will be sold under both the Hino and Isuzu brands.

With the Japanese economy on the rocks, demand for trucks and buses has plunged. According to the Times, manufacturers built only 1.7 million trucks and buses last year, down 40% since 1990.
