Leaf Rapids mine to close in spring of 2002

LEAF RAPIDS, Man. — Truckers running ore from the Ruttan Mine in Leaf Rapids will have to look for new freight to haul.

The mine, owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, is shutting down by May, 2002, as its supplies of zinc and copper have been exhausted.

Upon hearing the news of the impending closure, Premier Gary Doer and Highways Minister Steve Ashton flew to Leaf Rapids to get the ball rolling on community and labor adjustment committees.

There is a fear the mining town could become more of a ghost town as miners pack up their bags and leave to find work elsewhere.
