Manitoba, Texas sign trade deal, will promote north-south corridor

AUSTIN, Texas (April 8, 2002) — The governments of Manitoba and Texas have signed an agreement on transportation, trade, and security with the intent of creating a midcontinental trade corridor connecting the two.

Manitoba Premier Gary Doer signed a memorandum of understanding with Texas Secretary of State Gwyn Shea that commits both governments to increasing trade and specifically to improving the trade route running from Winnipeg through the Emerson border crossing, down through seven U.S. states and into Mexico at Laredo, Texas.

“The memorandum of understanding is the first time we’ve got the state of Texas to acknowledge this route,” Doer said. “We’ll continue to have more transportation jobs and we’ll have more value added manufacturing that is distributed along that trade route.”

The route is competing with other north-south corridors for U.S. government highway funds.

Trade between Manitoba and Texas is valued at $700 million.
