MTO contracts driver examinations to private sector

TORONTO, (Feb. 26, 2003) — The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has announced it has sold its driver examination business to the private sector.

The MTO issued a 10-year contract, worth about $114 million, to the Serco Group. The firm will now deliver vision tests, knowledge tests, road tests for commercial, class G1, G2, and motorcycle licences, and will book road test appointments.

The government expects to reduce the waiting time for road tests to a maximum of 6 weeks everywhere in the province, and all current 281 centres will continue to provide service. The Ministry will also retain control of all databases related to driver information to ensure personal privacy is protected. The switch is not expected to occur until later this fall.

According to the government “customer service will be improved through innovative service delivery and the government will continue to safeguard the public interest.”
