N.W.T. gets small piece of the SHIP pie

YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T. — The Northwest Territories has received its share of the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program funding, but it’s a paltry figure compared to what the provinces have received.

The feds are chipping in $4.5 million over the next five years, which will be matched by the Territories itself. The money is to be spent on highway improvements.

Secretary of State, Ethel Blondin-Andrew, visited the Territories on behalf of Transport Minister, David Collenette, saving him a trip to the frigid North.

“Federal and territorial investment in highways is beneficial from both a safety and economic perspective,” says Blondin-Andrew. “Investing in the Northwest Territories is good for all Canadians.”

N.W.T. Transportation Minister, Joseph Handley, adds “The Government of the Northwest Territories is pleased to sign this agreement and participate in the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program, which allows us to accelerate the ongoing reconstruction program on Hwy. 3 between Rae and Yellowknife.”
