NAFTA: half-a-year of surface trade declines

WASHINGTON — Surface transportation between Canada and the U.S. plummeted a whopping 36.6 percent in June from the same period in 2008.

That’s the six straight month trade has dropped between the two countries.

The value of imports carried by truck was 34.8 percent below June 2008 levels, while the value of exports carried by truck was 28.8 percent lower during this period.

North American surface transportation between all three NAFTA nations was also down significantly — 31.5 percent in June 2009 from the year-ago period, according to the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics
