New border bridge favored for Baileyville

ST. STEPHEN, N.B. — New Brunswick transportation officials want a new international bridge built at Baileyville, Me.

The location is about 13 kilometres away from downtown St. Stephen and Calais.

The preference was made clear in a letter released last week to members of an advisory panel set up by Maine’s Department of Transportation to study options for a new St. Croix River bridge.

Two possible bridge locations have been considered – one at Baileyville, near Route 9 in Maine, and one closer to St. Stephen and Calais, at the Calais Industrial Park.

Calais officials have pushed for the industrial park location, saying a bridge built outside city limits could kill an already fragile economy.
