New overhang requirements in Quebec

QUEBEC CITY, Que. — The transport ministry in La Belle Province has released a bulletin on new overhang limits for vehicles equipped with roll-on roll-offs.

When the equipment extends one metre of less, there are no special requirements, which Transport Quebec says is typical of many telescopic devices. However, under section 474 of the Highway Safety Code, anything longer than that one metre-mark requires a red flag or reflector during the day and light visible for no less than 150 metres at night.

Any overhang greater than two metres requires a Class 1 special permit under section 473 of the Code. Such a permit is only valid when the vehicle is being operated unloaded or carrying a single item, such as an empty container.

Strict enforcement of section 474 is set to begin on Nov. 15.
