Nova Scotia to issue special moves permits online

HALIFAX (May 29, 2002) — The province of Nova Scotia announced changes to the way it issues special moves permits, including a new program that will allow truck operators to pay for and generate most types of permits using the Internet.

The program, administered by Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, is expected to be available by mid-June.

The online permit program initially will apply to special moves permits onl. Users will pay for permits by credit card.

Other requirements expected to take effect next month:

* The province will require axle and inter-axle spacings as well as height, width, and length dimensions to be submitted for each special moves permit.

* Special moves, trip, or diesel fuel permits will no longer be issued at Nova Scotia’s five scale houses, although each location is outfitted with a phone line to reach either the provincial permit office or a permit company to comply.

* Vehicles must be registered for their maximum weight before a permit will be considered for an overweight situation.

* Requests for special consideration of permit conditions must be approved by Don Stonehouse, manager of transportation policy development (902/424-6726) or his delegate.
