Ontario requires re-testing for air-brake instructors

TORONTO (July 16, 2001) — The Ontario Ministry of Transportation will require all air-brake instructors and signing authorities to be re-certified by this fall, according to the Ontario Trucking Association.

Re-certification will be mandatory for those who are currently authorized to deliver the air brake course for the purpose of licence upgrades/renewals.

The one-day re-certification sessions will take place throughout the province during July and August. The cost of the session is $120.

Signing authorities who fail to successfully complete re-certification prior to the implementation of the new program will no longer be qualified to hold “Z” signing authority status.

The new course curriculum instructors will deliver consists of 12 hours of classroom and practical instruction based on a revised Instructor’s Manual. It will replace the current 10-hour course (for Class A) and 8.5-hour course (for other commercial classes), the association said.

Various industry associations including the Ontario Trucking Association, the Transportation Health and Safety Association of Ontario, and the Ontario Safety League are working together to deliver the training sessions.
