Ontario to consider changes to MJVT

TORONTO (March 31, 2003) — Ontario Finance Minister Janet Ecker will consider extending the province’s Multi-Jurisdictional Vehicle Sales Tax to all heavy commercial vehicles, the Ontario Trucking Association said Friday in an analysis of the provincial budget.

Ecker said consultations with stakeholders would be forthcoming.

The association wants changes to the MJVT, a modified retail sales tax system for vehicles operating in Ontario under the International Registration Plan. OTA president David Bradley said while there may be merit in harmonizing all vehicles under one system, “it must lead to an overall reduction in the sales tax burden on the industry.”

The MJVT refers to the annual prorated Ontario retail sales tax payable on vehicles operating both in Ontario and in another jurisdiction.
