Ottawa begins latest round of FSDP for transport modes

OTTAWA, (Aug. 24, 2004) — Transport Canada has announced they are accepting proposals for the next round of funding from Transport Canada’s Freight Sustainability Demonstration Program (FSDP) until October 31, 2004.

The FSDP provides financial assistance for projects that demonstrate technologies and best practices that can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel consumption from any freight mode (aviation, marine, rail, truck or intermodal). Projects may be awarded for up to 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $250,000 over a two-year period. Funding from all federal department sources cannot exceed 50 per cent of the eligible costs.

The program — first announced November 2001, allocates approximately $4.5 million between 2001 and 2006 for projects that meet its eligibility criteria.

An expert advisory committee, including representatives of federal departments, academic institutions, and not-for-profit organizations, makes recommendations on project funding. Proposals are evaluated by the committee twice a year, in April and November.

Transport Canada, in agreement with Natural Resources Canada, makes the final selection of projects that will receive funding.
