Port of Halifax funding to speed up trucks at terminals

HALIFAX, (June 1, 2004) — The Port of Halifax and its partners will receive federal funding to improve commercial vehicle traffic flows and truck gate security at the city’s two container terminals.

The Port Authority announced earlier this month that almost $400,000 will be going towards new transponder-based technology that will allow trucks to more quickly transport containers to and from the Port and customers. The technology will also allow container terminals to enhance truck access security.

Ediport Atlantic Inc. will receive $239,700 to implement advanced transponder applications at the Port of Halifax. An additional $125,000 will be invested between the Halifax Port Authority and Ediport Atlantic. Dalhousie University and IBI Group will provide in-kind support to launch the project this year.

“The Port will use the latest technology to make our container terminals more efficient for local trucking companies and more competitive for Port customers,” says Jim Nicoll, Manager of Systems for the Halifax Port Authority. “This builds on our truck gate “web cams” and should save time and money, while allowing container terminals to improve truck traffic flows and security and provide a high degree of customer service.”

The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission provided letters of support in the proposal.

The Port of Halifax recorded record container traffic during 2003, resulting in truck congestion and delays in moving containers to customers. Smart Port working groups addressed the short-term issues and recommended solutions such as “web cams” which were introduced to assist trucking companies with scheduling.
