Potato production sprouts higher

OTTAWA, Ont. — Estimates of the 2001 Canadian potato area are now pegged at 409,300 acres, up 0.7 per cent from 2000.

Despite the increased production, growers and the trucking industry that supports them, were hit hard by a U.S. ban on P.E.I. potatoes after a minute portion of the crop was infected with a harmless, disfiguring blight.

For more information on information about this year’s potato crop, call Statistics Canada at 800-216-2299.
