TORONTO, Ont. — In the wake of the eight week Ontario Public Services Employees Union (OPSEU) strike the Ministry of Transportation is making some special exceptions to keep truckers moving.

The province has automatically extended driver licence expiration dates and some specialized vehicle permits. Driver licences with an expiry date of Mar. 13, or later, have been extended until Aug. 2. The government is also making arrangements for extended hours of service at MTO offices.

All International Registration Plan (IRP) credentials with an expiry date of Mar. 31, or later, are automatically extended until further notice. The processing of IRP transactions will resume as soon as MTO’s computer system is fully restored. In the interim, the ministry will be issuing temporary Cab Cards to carriers with vehicles not previously registered with the plan.

Additionally, Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration and for-hire operating authorities will only be available when the carrier database has been fully restored to ensure certificates are issued go to eligible carriers only.

To obtain oversize/overweight permits carriers are asked to contact the MTO Carrier Safety and Enforcement Branch at 905-704-2500 for further information.

The following service are available immediately according to an MTO press release, plate renewal (one year only), trip permits, original registration, issuing of load broker certificates, single trip and special for-hire operating authorities permits, motor vehicle inspection station products and acceptance of applications for carrier-related permits.

Additionally you should call 416-325-8589 or 888-570-6110 to rebook a road test appointment missed due to the strike.

Some trucking services are not available until the week of May 21. These include booking or delivery of any new road tests, out-of-province exchanges, Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration (CVOR) certificates, CVOR abstracts and for-hire operating authorities.

If you have questions, before visiting an MTO office, customers are encouraged to call the MTO InfoLine at 416-235-4686 in Toronto, or toll-free at 800-268-4686.
